The Artistry of Aging
What if the breath was a pathway to joy?
There is a very old Chinese saying that says, “One who half breathes, half lives.” When you are feeling fatigue, lethargy, slight depression, or inability to focus have you ever taken a Breath Break?
You may find that your breathing has some restrictions. The good news is that you can choose to change that in any given moment. Shallow, upper chest, or restricted breathing represents so many things. It is a pattern not in alignment with well being, but instead restriction, limitation, and shutting down on life – YOUR LIFE!
Have you ever held your nose and tried to taste something? Or maybe you did that when you were young and your parents wanted you to eat something that you didn’t want to eat…so you held your nose and ate it because you couldn’t taste it, right?!
Shutting down on the breath shuts down more than just the breath. It obviously impacts your health and aliveness, but it also shuts down your joy and pleasure of living, being in the moment, your creativity, and your ability to “taste life”.
As a yoga therapist I always felt that restoring a full embodied breath was the most basic foundation for health. The stresses of life can potentially lock down this very breath that we were innately born with.
Below is a practice that I regularly taught students and clients. Breath of Joy has the power to refresh and renew bringing not only fresh oxygen into your body, but a much needed energy boost and even an attitude adjustment.
Let me know if you try it!

A little change of pace today! Every day I open myself to see what comes through to send on out to y’all. This morning I was struck by music – the kind that I can’t stay still around.
Knowing that everyone’s choice in music is vastly different I invite you to try on a different genre today. The music of Jon Cleary and The Absolute Monster Gentlemen – New Orleans funk and blues band…. always with SOUL. Born in England he traveled to New Orleans, LA as an 18 year old and never really came back except to visit.
When my dear Canadian friend Brian, who is a classically trained musician turned improv funky piano player, recommended I check out this man and his band I was a goner after listening to the song below and in checking out more (below/below).
Appreciating all kinds of music I have to say I have always been a funk, R&B, and soul music lover. My body simply couldn’t stay still with these beats. Enjoy!
….and if you liked that here is over an hour from a recent Blues Festival in 2022 withThe Absolute Monster Gentlemen, superb musicians on their own. Dance the beat baby…..
Short Bio: “Though originally from Kent, England, Jon Cleary’s name is synonymous with the storied New Orleans piano tradition. After leading his own band in the U.K. he relocated to NOLA. A regular at the legendary Maple Leaf Bar’s piano during off-hours, he was drafted to play a set that James Booker hadn’t shown up for. His performance earned him a steady gig with Walter Wolfman Washington. His reputation spread quickly due in large part to fiery solo shows. As a session player Cleary has also worked with rock, blues, and R&B artists including Bonnie Raitt, D’Angelo, Taj Mahal, and Eric Clapton. Whether playing solo or with his group, the Absolute Monster Gentlemen, Cleary is a must-see concert stages, and his recordings have been widely celebrated.”

Have you ever been so immersed in nature that you truly felt you had become one with it?
A conceptual collaborative photography project between Finnish and Norwegian artists Riitta Ikonen and Karoline Hjorth started off as a riff on traditional Nordic folklore….and then transformed to individual elders all over the world communing with nature in a way they had most probably never imagined. Becoming the center point – celebrated, valued and seen. A woven tapestry of communion with the natural world.
“Throughout history, elders have been traditionally revered for their experience and wisdom. Now, however, seniors often admit they feel as if they’ve been erased from the larger cultural conversation. But, by incorporating older models as almost sculptural elements into their compositions, Ikonen and Hjorth have created a body of work that takes ostensibly invisible individuals and makes them the center of attention.”
I invite you to click on the link for the article below to view the magic that happens when elders deeply connect with nature….and themselves.

Have you ever found yourself wondering what “home” means to you personally? The mystics say it resides inside and I agree with this. Yet, there is much more to this journey to reflect upon, let go into…. and be present to.
I love the term “wild divinity” in the excerpt below – “resting in the house of our own heart”. As we age this somehow becomes easier to do as the striving and outward focused actions fall away and the inner “home guidance system” takes precedence.
Excerpt from ETERNAL ECHOES

“Your vision is your home and your home should have many mansions to shelter your wild divinity.”
~John O’Donohue
Crossing the threshold into this wild divinity of our own heart brings a “belonging” that never goes away. This is foundation – the bricks, mortar and rooted earth – that brings with it the freedom to surrender into the next relationship, artistry, move, endeavor, location….life moment.
Having completed a 7th relocation almost two years ago now to the temperate rain forest area of Western N. Carolina I have been in the process of re-calibrating. Going deeper into unknown territory, using challenges as stepping stones for this next chapter of life.
On the outside it may look like I have been searching for a home and never quite getting there. This last time leaping from wildfires, air pollution, rolling blackouts and high daily living expense in California to a more elemental earth and water home sanctuary in Western N. Carolina surrounded by the ancient Blue Ridge Mountains, aligns with the “home” inside of me. Yet the loss of being close in distance to sons, grandchildren and friends is part of the letting go journey as well.
I find the wild beauty and grounding of the natural world and the ancient Blue Ridge Mountains serving as guidance whispered into my heart and soul as a reminder of building inner resilience, acceptance and trust.
When “home” resides in the wild divinity of the heart each place you find yourself – whether staying in a community where you were born and have established connections or exploring other cultures and landscapes – will serve as an awakening in and to life……

“Knowledge comes from learning. Wisdom comes from living.”
There are moments when I reflect on the fact that I have lived 35 year longer than my mother did. She never had the opportunity to even come close to elderhood. I wonder how she would have walked that path? I will never know….
Living into and embracing our own aging is an art. I can’t say that I have perfected it but I can say I am aware that every day is an opportunity to explore, discover, be curious, accept the challenges and learn from them.
Isn’t it in the stumbling and struggling, in our vulnerability and fragility, that we find our way – and only then the wisdom reveals itself. We pave the way in our mutual co-creation shining the light for others who look to us for guidance.
I invite you to watch this 18-minute TED Talk by Dennis Stamper if you have at all questioned what being an elder is all about. He speaks to his journey and that of so many of us. Articulate, soulful and wise presentation!
ABOUT ELDER MUSE – 31-DAYS IN DECEMBER, 2022
Taking responsibility for our own journey is at times incredibly challenging. For those of you who read this blog regularly you may have noticed there was only one blog post published from September-November.
I was on a journey of exploration and discovery on how it felt to work a temporary part time mainstream job 20-hours/week, as well as continue on with my own private house/pet sitting business at the same time. It seemed my writing and creativity went into a hibernation of sorts.
I became acutely aware of what is most important to me at this precious elder time of life..and what is not. What opens me to wholeness, creativity, compassion, beauty, peace of mind and love….and what shuts me down into scarcity and contraction in the midst, of “busyness”. .
From this short 3-month experience the “elder muse” made an appearance and patiently waited to reveal a plan to re-engage with creative artistry when the timing was right. Over the next 31 days you will receive a daily Elder Muse blog post accessed from the unfolding of the day – not planned or scheduled.
I have no idea what will arise…..but then do we really know ahead of time what our moment to moment daily experience will be? We are only asked to pay attention.
Case in point – Just now I almost missed this sunrise extravaganza while focused on the words instead of the ever transitioning beauty emerging right out the window…….

I appreciate that you will be along with me for this journey. Please feel free to make comments or add your own insights and humor…..
In Gratitude & Appreciation!

DECEMBER 2022: ELDER MUSE BLOG POSTS: https://wildlyfreeelder.wordpress.com/2022/12/
1600 year old ancient Oak, South Carolina
Today’s post is a reprint from Breathing Spaces published October 3, 2021. For some reason this morning I was drawn to look back at some posts I had written in the past and was particularly drawn to this one. Not only because it brought back memories of 4-year old Liam planting his acorns so there would be more trees to be with, but also for the deeply relevant video with Sue Swain, filmed by Green Renaissance, in moments when I needed to be reminded to….dance with life….Gaye Abbott
A very young voice filtered out from the trees at the local Nature Park where I walk every morning, only 2 blocks from my home. 4-year-old Liam and his father were out in nature for some father and son time this cloudy Sunday morning.
When I engaged with Liam, back pack on and a map in his hand, he told me that they were looking for acorns to plant in the park so more trees could grow. The map with a highlighted strip across it apparently guided Liam and his father along the path, and his backpack held a small container of gathered acorns, which he was very proud of.
We talked about squirrels and how they gather acorns for the Winter, and Liam was most insistent that they couldn’t bury them in the ground because the dirt would go right through their claws. With a little more conversation Liam understood how squirrels could store the nuts away, and then he was off on the path looking for a place to plant the acorns. A little later on I came across them again and Liam was planting his acorns in a place where the potential oak trees could grow and thrive.
Dancing with trees? Most certainly within a young boys context and with his father’s guidance. This young child is learning within nature that we as humans are a part, not separate, and that our conscious actions can make a difference. He is learning to dance with life!
My hope is that LIam goes on in his life connecting as deeply as he did today – with his father, with the trees, with the squirrels, with the dirt – and understands how everything is woven together in a community of life. May he be able to say to himself,
I AM HERE
I BELONG HERE
I HAVE A ROLE IN THE WHOLE
“Be wild every now and then. By regularly doing that, you will be reminded of how much nature means to us, how much solace it can bring, how much joy and peace and hope. You will be reminded of how deeply we are connected to all living things.”
Gratitude to Green Renaissance for this beautiful video! Filmed in Hermanus, South Africa. Featuring Sue Swain.

Wood Drake Photograph by Allan Van Gasbeck/Fine Art America
Awakening early this morning I pulled back the curtain and spied a brilliant shining star not far above the Blue Ridge Mountains in the East. Curiosity took me to find out what it was called – Sirius, the Dog Star, which slowly faded from view as the light of day stole through the sunrise color streaked sky.
There is much to despair of in this world and if attended too frequently can cause us to lose our way. In this poem Wendell Berry brings us the antidote …..

When despair for the world grows in me
and I wake in the night at the least sound
in fear of what my life and my children’s lives may be,
I go and lie down where the wood drake
rests in his beauty on the water, and the great heron feeds.
I come into the peace of wild things
who do not tax their lives with forethought
of grief. I come into the presence of still water.
And I feel above me the day-blind stars
waiting with their light. For a time
I rest in the grace of the world, and am free.
~Wendell Berry

‘May you awaken to the mystery of being here and enter the quiet immensity of your own presence’.
~John O’Donohue, “Blessing For Presence “
Come, take my hand and enter a space of understanding, self compassion, natural beauty
These moments are precious, for you will never get them back again
Let go with each sound of the bell and enter the sanctuary of the breath….in this moment and the next
Be still, embracing your vulnerability
Until your heart opens as a lotus flower, filled with the preciousness of life…your life, all life….

DECEMBER 2022: ELDER MUSE BLOG POSTS: https://wildlyfreeelder.wordpress.com/2022/12/
Today”s post is dedicated to a beloved friend in Scotland, who is on an immense heart opening journey at this time. I am deeply touched and grateful that you are sharing this journey with me. May you find love as your compass….
May we recognize the impact we have when we promote acceptance and inclusion – within ourselves and with others. All it takes are small simple acts of kindness, open compassion, non-judgemental listening, a deep letting go of what we think we know, and being willing to open our hearts.
“This video is a celebration of love in all of its beautiful, diverse forms. While this campaign was originally filmed in 2015, its message is timeless and continues to be relevant, perhaps even more so today. Allow this lovely video to fill your heart with hope and inspire you to trust love as your compass.” from Grateful Living.
“Bias and discrimination are among the most pressing issues facing our nation today. Love Has No Labels is a movement to promote acceptance and inclusion of all people across race, religion, gender, sexual orientation, age and ability. Throughout its duration, Love Has No Labels has opened a dialogue about our implicit biases — our assumptions, stereotypes, and unintentional actions toward others based on their perceived differences or labels — and erodes those biases by flooding the market with diverse images of love. We believe love is the most powerful force to overcome bias. Together, we can create a more inclusive world.”

DECEMBER 2022: ELDER MUSE BLOG POSTS: https://wildlyfreeelder.wordpress.com/2022/12/
At 8:45 this morning I was the first in line at our local post office in order to send off cards with monetary gifts and loving messages inside to my grandchildren in California who are 11 and 14. In fact I was so early they hadn’t opened for business yet, but I was warm and dry in the interior of the building on an overcast rainy day.
As one of the postal employees did his morning routine of organizing outside of the check out stations we engaged in conversation commenting on how busy it was this time of year and the necessary overtime the postal employees had to do in order to serve everyone during the holiday rush.
I made a comment thanking him for all the hours he was putting in and also that it made me happy that not everything was electronic and digital. That people still wrote letters and cards to each other and sent them off trusting that the United States Postal Service would get them to where they were going.
Every morning for many years my writing practice fills 2-3 pages in cursive handwriting using a fountain pen. Nothing fancy, just a 3 ring notebook with lined paper. The ink flowing on the page, the pressure needed, the letters connected together bringing me great pleasure. I am extremely saddened that my grandchildren have never been taught cursive writing as it has been taken out of their schools. Everything they do is digital.

Unfortunately, this may have lasting effects to the neural connections and activity in parts of the brain that are stimulated and improved with cursive handwriting. All of these connections interact with language, writing, and memory. It has even been shown to help with learning disabilities, motor skills, self discipline, grammar/spelling/and overall understanding.
“The use of pen and paper gives the brain more ‘hooks’ to hang your memories on. Writing by hand creates much more activity in the sensorimotor parts of the brain,” she added. “A lot of senses are activated by pressing the pen on paper, seeing the letters you write, and hearing the sound you make while writing. These sense experiences create contact between different parts of the brain and open the brain up for learning.” ~Audrey van der Meer, NTNU in Psychology Today, 7/28/2020
Beyond this I reflect on the simple act of sending a card or letter to someone you care about. It is not that I am resistant to digital e-cards, text messages and emails…..but receiving a handwritten missive from someone brightens my day.
Somehow I feel like it is more of a personal connection with the time and effort it took them to choose the card, write something of meaning, place a stamp on it and then send it off to my address. And it looks like it also benefits the sender!
Here is to anything that increases our neural pathways and memory as we age, as well as increases connection with those we love and care about……
